The Device - the Kindle 2
The e-reader we are using in our Kindle research project is the Kindle 2, which is the second generation of the Kindle.
Our selection of the Kindle 2 has the potential to significantly differentiate our research from that of the Kindle Pilot project currently underway between Amazon and other seven colleges and universities in the United States. (Those institutions are Arizona State University, Case Western Reserve, Pace University, Princeton University, Reed College, the Darden School at the University of Virginia, and the University of Washington.) The Kindle Pilot utilises the Kindle DX device, which has some different features than the Kindle 2.
We argue, in the Pedagogy section, that the Kindle 2 is a superior instructional device even though it and the Kindle DX share many of the same features.
Currently, the Kindle 2 is available for $259.00. The e-reader weighes 10.2 ounces, is approximately one-third of an inch thick, has a screen area of 16.6 sq. inches (6 inches on the diagonal), and 2 GB in memory, which can hold approximately 1,500 books.
The K2 utilises E-Ink display technology (very cool), 600 x 800 screen resolution, 16-level greyscale, has text-to-speech capabilities, a built-in dictionary, note-taking and highlighting resources, a basic web browser, free wireless connectivity throughout the U.S., and long battery life. The K2 reads a variety of file formats, from HTML, DOC, converted PDF, TXT, MOBI, MP3, JPG, GIF, PNG, and a few more. It has a headphone jack and a USB port. In sum, some remarkable educational capabilities.
