About our iPad Project
At last count, there are seventeen other colleges and universities in the United States actively exploring the possibilities of utilising the iPad. Pilot
projects range from thirty iPads available for 4 hours lending at the library at the University of North Carolina to incoming medical students at Stanford University
to all entering first year students at Seton Hill University to full-time professors at Williston State College (North Dakota). Our research project at
Southern Vermont College raises the total to 18 schools.
Interestingly, only Southern Vermont College (SVC) and Reed College are schools trying out the iPad this Fall who also conducted Kindle pilot projects in Fall, 2009. Reed curtailed their Kindle pilot project in late 2009 until the machines are accessible to blind and visually impaired students.
Interestingly, there are also some universities (Cornell, George Washington, and Princeton) which are reticent to embrace the iPad for a range of possible network problems.
The testing for our iPad Project began this past Summer, as part of the development testing for an educational iPhone application developed in Professor Crowell's Spring eLearning class.
Beginning this Fall semester, we began testing the iPad for both educational and organisational uses in BE370 - Mobile Learning & Complex Inquiry, led by Professor Crowell.
The entire list of colleges and universities conducting iPad pilot projects this Fall is: Chicago State University, Duke University, George Fox University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Long Island University, North Carolina State University, Northwest Kansas Technical College, Notre Dame University, Oklahoma Christian University, Oklahoma State University, Penn State University, Reed College, Scottsdale Community College, Seton Hill University, Southern Vermont College, Stanford University, University of Maryland - College Park, and Williston State College.
